Closing Line Value (CLV): The Best Test of Betting Skill
Updated 2026-10-025 min read
Closing line value (CLV) measures whether the odds you bet at were better than the final odds offered just before the event starts. Because closing prices absorb the most information, consistently beating them is widely used as a faster and less noisy signal of skill than profit and loss alone.
The formula
CLV % = (odds you took ÷ closing odds) − 1. Example: you bet at 2.20 and the market closes at 2.00. CLV = 2.20 / 2.00 − 1 = +10%.
In probability terms: 2.20 implies 45.5%, 2.00 implies 50%. The market later agreed the event was likelier than your entry price assumed, which is exactly what a good price-taker wants to see.
Why it is useful
Results are extremely noisy: a bettor with a genuine 5% edge can still be behind after 200 bets. Closing odds are available for every bet immediately, so CLV gives a verdict on hundreds of bets with far less variance than profit.
- Positive CLV over a large sample is strong evidence that you are finding prices before the market corrects them.
- Negative CLV over a large sample suggests the odds you take are, on average, worse than what the market ends up believing, whatever your recent results say.
Limits and traps
- Use margin-free closing odds when comparing, otherwise the closing margin distorts the figure.
- Compare against a sharp, liquid closing price, not a soft bookmaker's.
- A small sample proves nothing: a few dozen bets can show positive CLV by chance.
- CLV is evidence of skill, not a guarantee of profit.
Frequently asked questions
What is closing line value in betting?
It compares the odds you took with the final odds before the event starts. Taking higher odds than the closing price is positive CLV.
How do you calculate CLV?
Divide the odds you took by the closing odds and subtract 1. Taking 2.20 against a 2.00 close gives +10%.
Does positive CLV guarantee profit?
No. It is a strong indicator over large samples, but results still depend on variance and on the accuracy of the closing line.
